Project Description

Q & A with Christian Aldana

When did you start?

I’ve been writing poems since I was in middle school, but it wasn’t until college that I understood what spoken word was. I came across this video by Watsky, called “Drunk Text Message to God” – it was like poetry and theatre rolled into one. I started writing and performing spoken word during my Sophomore year of college.

What do you hope to achieve through the Kollaboration experience?

Kollaboration is such a wonderful opportunity to perform in front of the community I hold closest to my heart. I hope that my performance inspires other Asian American poets to write and to express themselves through spoken word. I want to see more of us grab the mic to tell our stories.

On a day off, you can find me…

Trying to get better at salsa dancing, searching for the perfect lowkey cocktail bar, or wandering around bookstores trying to not to buy everything…

People would be surprised to learn that…

I grew up in Saigon, Vietnam. I lived in the Philippines til I was about 7, and then my family moved us to Saigon, where I finished high school.

My biggest inspirations are…

My friends and family! I’m very lucky to be surrounded by strong women who support me and challenge me every step of the way. When it comes to spoken word artists in particular, I really look up to Sarah Kay.

If I could perform with anybody in the world, it would be…

Bambu and Rocky Rivera. They’re both amazing Filipinx hip hop artists who just produce such honest, thought-provoking work, it would be an honour to perform with either of them.
