Project Description

Q & A with Matthew Cabrera

When did you start?

When I was 5 back in 2004, my parents gave me the opportunity to take up an instrument. I used to listen to this program called “Baby Mozart” which led me to choose violin after hearing it through the classical music. I’ve dabbled in piano and guitar and other various instruments, but I consider violin my primary focus.

What do you hope to achieve through the Kollaboration experience?

I’m pretty young, so I’d like to use Kollaboration to get some experience in performing and sharing my love of music with the public. I hope to make connections with others who have the same passion, especially within the Asian/Asian-American community.

On a day off, you can find me…

Facebook livestreaming, flipping water bottles, and/or at Buffalo Wild Wings. I dabble in internet memes, and I either catch onto them too late or overdo them. However I do like to stick to my roots and post an occasional cover on social media

People would be surprised to learn that…

When I was born, my mother was very sick to the point that the doctors said I had the possibility of being deaf. Not only was that outcome disproven, but now I can play any song by ear!

My biggest inspirations are…

My parents, who have been my biggest support system and have always taught me to take advantage of every opportunity I am faced with (even the little things like practicing during my free time). Through their endless support from paying for lessons to buying me the equipment I need to pursue music, I could not be where I am without them. As my mother always tells me, they came here with two suitcases and a dream. To see both of them grow to be as successful as they are in their respective fields drives me to find success in what I do.

If I could perform with anybody in the world, it would be…

If we’re talking from any time period, Paganini for sure. But if we’re talking currently, I would love to play violin with JunCurryAhn or Sarah Chang. Also doing a little something with John Mayer or Ed Sheeran would be cool. Low key would spit fire with Kendrick Lamar though (collab?)
